Export a session to eBird
From the end of a walk to a checklist in your eBird account. BirdScribe saves the checklist on your phone, and you import it yourself with eBird's own import tool.
BirdScribe is not affiliated with eBird. The export is a file in eBird Record Format. You need an eBird account, and the import happens on eBird's website, not in the eBird app.
In BirdScribe
1. On the trip summary, tap Send to eBird.
Review the trip first if you want to merge duplicate sightings or fix a name. If anything still needs you, BirdScribe shows it before the file is written.
2. The checklist is saved on your phone.
On iPhone it is in the Files app, in the BirdScribe folder. On Android it is in Downloads. Nothing is uploaded at this point.
Finish on your phone
3. Tap Open eBird Import.
eBird's import page opens. Sign in to eBird if it asks.
4. Choose the format, then the file.
Choose eBird Record Format (Extended). Then tap Choose File and pick the newest file in the BirdScribe folder on iPhone, or in Downloads on Android. Carry on from step 9 below.
Or finish at a computer
5. Under “At a desk soon? Email me a link”, type your address and tap Send.
This uploads the file to birdscribe.com and emails you a link to it. The link works for 15 minutes, so open it soon.
6. On your computer, open the link and tap Download your export.
The download opens in its own tab, so the page stays put. Come back to it for the next step.
7. Tap Open eBird Import.
eBird's import page opens in a new tab. Sign in to eBird if it asks.
If the link has expired
After 15 minutes the link stops working and the page says so. Nothing is lost: the checklist is still on your phone. Export again from the trip summary and ask for a fresh link.
On eBird
8. Select eBird Record Format and choose the file.
eBird offers more than one file format. BirdScribe writes eBird Record Format (Extended), so choose that one. The file’s name starts with birdscribe and the date of the walk.
9. Upload the file.
10. Work through eBird's review step.
eBird checks every row before it creates the checklist. Where BirdScribe exported a group name rather than a species, such as "duck sp." or "raptor sp.", eBird asks you to confirm or narrow it. That prompt is normal, not an error. Choose the species if you know it, or keep the group name. When eBird is satisfied, the checklist appears in your account like any other.
